Ryan Walter played and coached more than 1100 games over 17 seasons in the National Hockey League. Drafted second overall by the Washington Capitals, Ryan was named the youngest NHL captain, won a Stanley Cup with the Montreal Canadiens, and finished his playing career with his hometown Vancouver Canucks. Ryan was an NHL All-Star and 3-time Team Canada member, World Junior Captain, Vice-President of the National Hockey League Players Association, BC Hockey Hall of Fame inductee, NHL Man of the Year, Gold Medal-winning Head Coach of Canada’s National Women’s Hockey Team, one of the 30 top all-time Washington Capitals and top 100 Montreal Canadiens in 100 years.
Off the ice, Ryan has been the founding partner in 2 start-up companies, a TV hockey analyst, hockey expert and actor, board and electronic game creator, the President of a Professional Hockey Team, the TEC Canada Speaker of the Year, and the author of 5 books. Ryan has served as a Director of Partners International Canada, the Hockey Canada Foundation, Focus on the Family Canada, Hockey Ministries International, Heritage Christian School, and is a member of the Seton Hall University School of Business Leadership Advisory Council. A speaker and corporate trainer by profession, Ryan continues to inspire leaders, teams, churches, businesses, and organizations across North America and beyond, to become their very best.
The Walter family has been deeply connected to TWU over the years. Ryan graduated from Trinity Western University with a Master of Arts in Leadership, his daughter Christi graduated from Trinity with a Communications Degree, sons Ryan Jr and Joe both attended and played on the hockey team, and his oldest son, Ben is currently the Head Coach of the TWU Men’s Hockey Team. Even Ryan’s wife, Jennifer took a screenwriting course one summer at Trinity. Their youngest daughter Emma supported them all. Ryan and Jenn have been married for 41 years and have been blessed with six amazing grandchildren.
