The David Mutabazi Story: David Mutabazi is a third-year psychology major who plays for the Trinity Western Spartans’ Men’s Basketball team. He was recruited to play for the Spartans when he was in the middle of his first year at Columbia Bible College and began playing for them in the fall of 2022. His first impression of Trinity Western University was that it was a place where he would be encouraged to “not get lost and know what you’re here for.” He immediately felt comforted by the presence of mentors and peers who cared as much about the academic side of being a Spartan as they did about the sporting aspect of it. “I never dreamed I could go to a school like this,” David says as he reflects on the generous Spartan scholarship which has enabled him to attend TWU. His gratitude for the scholarship has fueled his commitment to growing in the gym, on the court, and indeed off the court. Between the impact of spiritual leaders on his team and the setting aside of intentional devotional times for him and his teammates to participate in, David believes that he has been given everything he needs in order to ensure that his athletic pursuits are grounded in his ultimate purpose i.e. to glorify God. “I think that intentionality is very important,” he explains. “If we lose that,” he continues, “what’s the difference between us and any other school?” He finds it difficult to put into words what impact the donations and prayers of faithful Spartan supporters have had on him and countless other athletes.
